Me too, and I enjoy driving just with stock tires even if I modify cars. I just find it less run with race tires. I guess I enjoy driving street cars, so I want them to feel like street cars not race cars!

With regards to the old tires discussion... I bought an extra set of wheels to put my race tires on, and they had some old all seasons on when I got them. Plenty of tread left but they were 5 years old....it was baaaaad. Seriously dangerous. About as much traction in the wet as there is in the snow with a new set of all seasons.

With the oversteer vs understeer discussion...when I'm driving enthusiastically, I do enjoy a car that'll oversteer when I want it to. But I do agree that understeer is safer in 99.9% of situations for 99.9% of drivers...

Ghost Recon 2 is worth a look if you can find it for a good price. I like the strategy and pacing of the game. Lots of sniping if you want to do it too which I really enjoy

And Table Tennis is great fun in two player when you're having a drink with your mates! I picked it up for $20, and you can't really go wrong for that price.

I'm somewhere in between. I always use the correct degrees of steering lock for all cars on the DFP, instead of setting it up purely to be as quick as I can with less steering lock. If I had a G25 I'd use the clutch and shifter for fun pickup races but to be honest if I did get into a league or something where I really wanted to be competitive, I'd use the paddles and 2 pedals

"Sh*t, it gets tighter!"

Before I drove the 'Ring I got a passenger ride with a nice guy in an MX-5, and he knew which way to go, but had a terrible line into Adenauer Forst and took quite a bit of curb

Priceless! Yeah, almost as good as riding your CBR1000 at breakneck speeds around the 'Ring only to be overtaken by a transit van!

Hit the rev limiter in 5th in my stock '90 miata down a really steep hill, which is 136mph or 219km/h (calculated using tire size and gearing, not looking at the speedo). Done a similar speed indicated on my motorbike, but I know the speedo overreads and it was more likely 120mph.

I have a friend who hit the limiter in his turbo miata on the same hill, which with his longer final drive ratio is 155mph, only thing is he was going UP the hill

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :No, anyone who uses a shotgun to try and remove a lug nut deserves no credit. It is the most stupid thing I have ever heard of, as it'll just damage the wheel and everything in the general area.

Thankyou, sir, for just making my day

Quote from STROBE :And anyone who thought it was Brits who best understood sarcasm and irony, will no doubt have a wry smile at the irony of this.

Haha, yes! Well I am British myself, moved to Canada 8 years ago when I was 16 and am now proud to call myself a Canadian citizen! But you're right, it does go to show some Brits have a better idea of the concept than others

Nice video! Thanks for posting it. I saw there was a post in the comments from the person who posted the video asking whether there would be interest in a showdown between the EDO Porsche that's done a 7:15 and this car, so I replied saying heck yes! Who knows whether that is just a thought at the moment or if there are any plans together, but some positive responses to the suggestion can't be a bad idea

Yeah, for sure! Is yours an earlier one? I've autox'd earlier and later model S2000s and the vtec can be 'fun' in the older ones, but of course a bit more difficult to manage! Definitely less pronounced in the later cars, although I think that was part of the charm of the earlier cars I also drove a supercharged S2000, with a surprisingly peaky powerband. Now THAT was fun when it hit vtec.

I really enjoy using LFS Tweak to get an idea of how much difference power mods or wider tires or other mods make. You can add a turbo or more boost to a car and see what happens. Maybe you'll have higher peak speeds, but then your times will be quite similar, and perhaps there are other changes you can make that help more. I am really looking forward to the day (if it comes) when LFS has a supported car editor with which we can make whatever changes we like and really experiment with car development in the game. I think that's the point when LFS could really start turning into a useful tool for real life racers. It's already great, but just imagine the potential

Hmm, yeah, that's a difficult situation! What I would suggest is making another copy of LFS with the earlier patch that allows you to use LFS Tweak. I have found that without using Tweak, the XR GT is fairly close to my Miata, and the FZ50 is close to my friends 996 911 GT3 that I've been fortunate enough to race a few times lately. I have another friend with a 260rwhp turbo Miata, and for that I modified an XRGT in LFS Tweak and was surprised how similar an effective driving technique is in LFS and RL. The key with that car is just to keep off the damn throttle! In the sim and RL you can get full power down in 2nd gear in a straight line, but it's sooo easy to overshoot the next turn when you try and use full throttle at every possible opportunity.

Edit: Thinking more about getting something similar to your s2k in LFS...I would think the closest car in the game is the XRT. The weight is not far off, and same with the power. Yeah, it's turbo and has a different powerband than the vtec in the s2k, but overall for practice with autox I'd say you could get it feeling close enough. If you were going to modify something in LFS Tweak I would start with the XRT, and change the engine to be similar in characteristics to s2k (although you can't model the vtec in LFS of course...). Tire width I believe is fairly close in the XRT but you can always change that so it's just right in Tweak anyway.

Bawbag, you really need to have a go at autocross in real life if you haven't already. If you're ever thinking of taking a holiday in the Vancouver area you can autocross my Miata and show ppl how it's done :P

Quote from Bandit77 :waaah... i'm relatively skinny, and when having raced a few laps in a rental kart, my pelvis aches and I get nice bruises in the "seat" area.

Then imagine what it's like to be 6ft 3, 240lbs, rather badly out of shape, and trying to do some decent laptimes in a race kart that'll pull a heck of a lot harder than a basic rental kart.

If I was racing in karts or single seaters, fitness would be a big issue for me. I have done a dozen laps of my local outdoor kart track in a race kart (first time in anything other than the crappy rentals!) and I was absolutely exhausted. That isn't really much of a factor in autox which is nice, so I can still be quick

Nice idea with driftland. Simple yet lots of fun! I like the freedom of being able to choose what turns you want to link and how you want to do it all, lots of possibilities

Nice layout! I like some of the corner sequences. The only thing I'd say against it is that I'd find it more fun if most of the corners weren't blind due to the high barriers used.

Lots of negativity about this guy in this thread! I think he deserves some credit for being innovative. Expect his book "101 things to do with a shotgun" to hit the shelves in the Spring.

And LFS Setups sounds rather official too. Well, any way to get more hits I guess...

Hamed Sam - when I'm learning a new track, I don't worry about speed at all at first. I pick a car I am familiar with (so I'm not learning two new things at once) and then just cruise around. Figure out where I'm going and then start to pick up speed and see how things feel. Then, after I know which direction all the turns go and I'm speeding up, I start to see which gear I will take each turn. If I am getting close to the limit and I'm near the maximum revs in one gear, I will try it in the next gear up next lap. Often being in a higher gear will help keep the car stable even if you do give up a bit of acceleration.

Once you have got to the stage where you know which gear you want to take each turn in, and you are starting to get more smooth, have a look at some replays to get some idea of how to improve your speed. I don't think there's any one way to go about learning a new track, but I generally take it slowly and gradually speed up once I'm more comfortable with the circuit. Of course as you get more experienced this process will take less time, but don't rush it and just get some practice!

Yeah, that's awesome. Show those kids with their JDM cars a thing or two. Nice numberplate too The car I enjoy drifting the most is actually the Merc sedan with an SLR motor in it. Ok, not so much of a sleeper as a family car that's FWD stock, but fun all the same!

Quote from Blaeza :Anyone tried the Golf GTi mk 2? Mine is fully upgraded with the R32 drivetrain and 630 bhp + 950kg overall weight = FAST!

Yeah, AWD helps with the power eh I did one up and kept it looking absolutely stock, bit of a sleeper... I find I'm spending a lot of time creating sleepers and seeing which of my supercars I can beat with totally stock looking cars. Lots of fun The only restriction I give myself is I must use the original tires, because as soon as you stick race tires on it's no longer a straight comparison between the two cars of course. And I don't do the final weight reduction as the roll cage kinda reduces the sleeper effect a little

I think an easier LFS vs RL comparison than circuit racing is autocross. I am totally certain that on a real life circuit I would be afraid of pushing as hard as I do in LFS (for good reason!!), but assuming you have an autocross course with no obstacles nearby, there is no reason not to push as hard as you would in autocross in LFS.

One thing I notice myself doing in my stock miata in autox is a quick initial input to get the car transitioned and then a second, larger input once it is settled in a turn. I find myself doing this in LFS also when driving a car with soft suspension. In real life and in LFS, as soon as I am driving a car with a stiffer suspension setup (ie. a CSP Miata in RL) I no longer do this two-stage input, if you want to call it that. In the time it takes to make that first input, the car is settled.

I do notice a lot of similarities with my driving style in real life and LFS, and I think it's nice to be able to make that comparison. As for similarities in how it feels to drive in LFS and real life, given similar cars, that's another discussion...however I've autox'd cars in RL very similar to the XFG, XRG, XRT, RB4, FXO, FZ5, and XRR, and been impressed with the similarities between characteristics of all of the LFS and RL cars.
